James Kelsey Nelson

Teaching Artist - Theater

James Kelsey Nelson (he/him/his) is a director, playwright, and theatre instructor based in Chicago. James has taught acting and directing courses at Indiana University, where he received his MFA in Theatre Directing. He previously served as the Artistic Director of the Anglo-Irish Theatre Group in Tübingen, Germany, and worked for several years as a freelance director in the San Francisco Bay Area, directing productions for Custom Made Theatre Company, Ross Valley Players, Masquers Playhouse, FaultLine Theater, Dragon Productions, Novato Theater Company and others.


As a playwright, James has written over twenty short plays including Callback Comedown, which premiered with No Dogs in the Kitchen in Chicago in March, Mucho Millions, which will be produced in Connecticut in March following previous productions in Chicago and South Korea, The Waterfall Scene, which was just produced in New York in January and in Minneapolis before that, Beer Culture, which was produced in San Francisco and Chicago, Goldhallow Inn, which was produced in Ohio and North Carolina, Cataclysm which was produced in Florida, Hornswoggle which was produced in Connecticut, Trapped in Zoom which was produced virtually in Germany and California, and others.
